Preparing for Your First Session

You do not need to have everything figured out

The first session is a starting conversation. Your therapist will help organize what matters, explain the process and clarify whether the service feels like a useful fit.

BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT

Complete requested secure intake forms when possible.
Review fees, insurance and cancellation information.
For virtual care, choose a private location in Ontario and test your internet, camera and audio. See Virtual Therapy Information for preparation and connection help.
Have the secure appointment link available.
Avoid joining while driving or from a place where you cannot speak privately.

WHAT TO THINK ABOUT

What has been most difficult recently?
When did you first notice the concern?
What helps, even a little?
What would make therapy feel worthwhile?
Are there cultural, identity, family or accessibility factors you want your therapist to understand?

You can arrive without complete answers.

WHAT THE THERAPIST MAY ASK

Your therapist may ask about current concerns, relevant history, relationships, daily functioning, safety, strengths, prior support and goals. You can ask for clarification, pause or discuss the pace.

CONFIDENTIALITY

The therapist will explain confidentiality, its legal limits, record keeping and how information is handled before care proceeds.

AFTER THE SESSION

You and your therapist may identify initial goals, possible strategies, follow-up timing and any questions about fit. It is normal to need time to reflect.

FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS

The therapist will explain who attends, how caregiver involvement works and how a young person’s privacy is balanced with legal and safety responsibilities.
